What should I expect?
Nutrition counseling with a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) will help you meet your personal goals related to healthy lifestyle changes, managing medical conditions, and weight and fitness. Individuals may self-refer or may be referred by their physician. An initial visit will last from 60 – 90 minutes. You will be asked about your medical history, nutrition history, your current eating patterns, lifestyle and specifically what you want to achieve with nutrition counseling. Follow up visits may last from 30 – 60 minutes depending on the complexity of the condition. The frequency of visits will be determined according to individual needs and schedules. Your appointment schedule can be flexible, however most people progress best with regular visits.
If you are seeking nutrition counseling for diabetes, you will also be asked about your blood sugar readings, monitoring, and any problems you are having with management. An individualized nutrition plan will be developed with you, based on the information you provide. You will be guided to make gradual changes from visit to visit and your progress will be assessed at each visit.
